Penelope, an intelligent woman

The Odyssey, the famous epic written by Homer, is considered one of the most important works of Western literature. This epic story narrates the adventures of Odysseus, the brave Greek hero who fights to return home after the Trojan War. However, amidst the numerous feats and challenges that Odysseus faces, there is a character who stands out for her intelligence and cunning: Penelope, Odysseus’ wife.

Penelope is presented as a virtuous and faithful woman who patiently awaits her husband’s return while dealing with suitors who harass her to choose one of them as her new husband. Throughout the epic, Penelope demonstrates great intelligence and skill in handling the difficult situation she finds herself in.

One of the ways in which Penelope shows her intelligence is through her cunning to delay marriage with one of the suitors. Knowing that her husband could return at any moment, Penelope promises to choose a suitor when she finishes weaving a shroud for Odysseus’ father. However, every night she undoes the weaving she had done during the day, thus prolonging her decision and keeping the suitors at bay.

In addition, Penelope also demonstrates her intelligence by devising a test for suitors who wish to marry her. She proposes that whoever is able to string and shoot Odysseus’ bow, something only he can do, will be chosen. This test not only shows Penelope’s cunning but also her loyalty to Odysseus, as only a man worthy of her husband would be able to pass it.

Another example of Penelope’s intelligence is her ability to hide her true plan from the suitors. During his absence, Odysseus disguises himself as a beggar and only reveals his true identity to his son Telemachus and his faithful nurse Eurycleia. Penelope, upon learning of Odysseus’ presence, keeps his secret and does not reveal anything to the suitors, thus avoiding putting her husband’s plan to end them in danger.

Penelope’s intelligence also manifests in her ability to maintain hope and faith in Odysseus’ return. Despite the years that have passed since his departure, Penelope refuses to believe that her husband is dead and continues to await his return. This perseverance and confidence in her husband demonstrate her emotional intelligence and inner strength.

In summary, Penelope is a standout character in the Odyssey for her intelligence and cunning. Through her actions and decisions, she demonstrates her ability to face and overcome the challenges that come her way. Her ability to delay marriage, devise tests, and hide Odysseus’ true identity are just some examples of her intelligence. Penelope is an example of feminine strength and wisdom in a male-dominated era, and her role in the Odyssey is fundamental to the development of the plot.
